The holidays can be a great time to socialize with friends and family, but they can be extremely stressful. Family dynamics can be complicated, schedules can be too hectic and gift-buying can trigger financial pressure. Plus, many people carry some difficult baggage into the holidays that prevents or limits enjoyment – loneliness, depression, divorce, death, loss, absence of a loved one.
Here are some tips for de-stressing over the holidays: - Respect your limits. Prioritize social options and establish a realistic event schedule. Learn to say no.
- Set a budget for spending and stick to it.
- Eat healthy and increase your exercise to keep your equilibrium and compensate for any extra calorie intake.
- Keep as close to your normal schedule as you can. Don’t shortchange your sleep!
- Look for shortcuts and timesavers, such as shopping online.
- Find quiet time to be alone and engage in calming activities: curl up with a good book, take a walk, meditate or take an extra nap.
- Accept that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Problems happen, be flexible and go with the flow.
- Stay focused on others and cultivate an “attitude of gratitude.”
- Call your EAP if you feel depressed, overwhelmed or stressed.
